For the longest time I thought a refurbished TV and a used TV were different terms for the same thing. In fact, I thought refurbished was just a half-dollar word for used. I sure am glad someone set me straight. Knowing the difference saved me from my own ignorance.

When a buddy at work told me he'd just bought a refurbished set online and gave me the store's website address, I just smiled, thanked him and stuck it in my wallet. What I was thinking though was, man, things must be tight for Doug if he's buying a used TV set. I'm really glad I kept my mouth shut though and chose to say nothing. It would have made me look stupid.

A couple of weekends later, I was at his house. We'd gone inside for a cold one and I was looking around for the set he'd gotten such a great deal on. The only one I saw was this massive 52" plasma flat panel on the main wall of the living room. He laughed at the stunned look on my face, but I couldn't hide the fact I was impressed. The thing looked brand new.

He asked if I'd been to the website he'd given me, and I had to admit I hadn't because I thought it was for used TVs. So he explained to me that a refurbished TV was not really used, it was one whose original factory seal had been broken. Maybe somebody took it home for a few days and decided they wanted a different size, or they may have realized as soon as they got it out of the box that it wasn't what they wanted.

For whatever reason, it came back to the store, where it could no longer be sold as new. It's then sent back to the factory where they test it thoroughly, repack it and send it on to distributors they've authorized to sell the 'refurbs' to the general public. Anyway, I've been doing some research of my own since then, trying to scare up a great deal for myself on a refurbished HDTV. Samsung UN46B8500 46-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV Review

CNET called the UN46B8500 the TV with the second best picture quality of any TV they tested behind the discontinued Pioneer Kuro plasma. However, since the Samsung UN558500 is much more energy efficient, thinner, lighter, is 240 HZ, and includes two remotes, I'd say the Samsung UN46B8500 is probably a contender for the best TV ever made.

The black levels are amazing! It's actually hard to tell where the black bars of a widescreen movie end and run into the bezel since the Samsung is so close to absolute black.

On the other hand, I found that the speakers on the TV were pretty mediocre. This TV's picture quality is superb, but not the sound. You'll want to buy extra speakers of some sort.

The 4 HDMI ports are nice to have, but there's only one component/RCA input (which will be taken by your Wii if you own one). The TWO included remotes are great; One is small and simple, the other is an RF remote featuring a spinwheel among other controls.

The other strong surprise is just how well the TV works with Amazon! Once you register your TV with Amazon (a slick 5 minute process where you leave your TV on then log on to Amazon from your compter), then any movie you rent via the Amazon website will be available to watch on the TV set, and I discovered that sometimes when purchasing Blu Ray movies from Amazon, you can watch a free digital version of it on your TV while you wait for the mail to come! It works super well, you just browse Amazon as you normally would, and your purchased/rented movies automatically show up as available movies on your TV!

Granted the Yahoo! widgets (including the one for Amazon VOD) are pretty slow taking about 20 seconds to load, but it's tolerable for the limited use they see.

Otherwise the TV is just great! Note that you'll want to upgrade your firmware when you first get the TV to avoid the "crop circle" problem, but once you do, your movies and TV shows are going to be even more fun because of the outstanding punch of the picture. I love my UN55B8500 so far!

LCD is winning the race to be the dominant display technology for HDTV. According to DisplaySearch, in 2007, the market for LCD (liquid crystal diode) TVs was estimated at $27.4 billion. LCD TV shipments rose a stronger than expected 52% year to year in the second quarter of 2008 to nearly 7.5 million units (79.8% of total HDTV sales).

The LCD screen on a LCD HDTV is a selective light filter. It does not in itself emit light, but selectively filters light passing through the display from the back. Most HDTVs include either a single sheet of luminescent plastic or sidelighting with fluorescent lamps to provide the backlight. Both techniques are difficult to control.

Many consumers focus on screen resolution when selecting a High Def (HDTV) system. Is this HDTV 720p, 1020i, or 1020p? However, when an expert group, the SMPTE (Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers), recently ranked the importance of screen resolution, it ranked fourth. The SMPTE ranked contrast ratio, color saturation, color temperature and grayscale ahead of screen resolution in importance. The Imaging Science Foundation reached a similar conclusion. Backlighting is the key component to improvement in contrast ratio and grayscale.

It is important that an LCD system allows for adjustment of the level of backlighting, and preferably, performs this function automatically. This will improve the contrast of the picture. Also, a reduced backlight level will also reduce power consumption and extend lamp life, as the power used and lamp lifetime is directly related to the backlight level. A lamp with a 50,000 hour lifetime at 6 milliamps may only have a 30,000 hour lifetime if the current is 7 milliamps, just 1 milliamp higher (Example: Sharp Electronics LCD Display).

Another important factor in the choice of backlighting is the consideration of "blur". Blur occurs when there is rapid motion in the programming, such as sports. When the picture changes quickly, the pixels can lag in response. Effective backlight engineering can reduce this significantly by strobing the backlighting, so that the individual pixels do not remain lit longer than needed. Examples of this technique include the Philips "Aptura" and the Samsung "LED Motion Plus".

Sidelighting

With sidelighting, the backlight is located in the back of the LCD panel, and to each side to create panel illumination. To make the light more uniform, a light diffuser is located between the lamps and the rear of the optical filter module. Most LCD systems that use sidelighting use cold cathode fluorescents (CCF) lamps. This technology provides a very bright white light. The lifetime of the lamps is usually between 10,000 to 20,000 hours (6-12 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).

The most important disadvantage is that the intensity of light cannot be varied locally, and sidelighting can look non-uniform. Some CCF lamps contain mercury. This is an ecological disadvantage.

Conventional Backlighting

Most backlighting is performed with a single sheet of electroluminescent plastic. These panels can age (though improvements in this area have reduced this problem). Electroluminescent Panel backlighting uses colored phosphors to generate light. Displays using this technique can be thin and lightweight, and provide even light distribution.

The major drawbacks:

Limited life of 3,000 to 5,000 hours to half brightness (2-3 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).
The intensity of light cannot be varied locally.

LED Backlighting

LED backlighting uses a matrix of LEDs that can be controlled individually to offer very good control. In this configuration, a large number of LEDs are mounted uniformly behind the display. Brightness improvements in LEDs have made them more practical for backlighting. NEC pioneered this technique with their monitor, the 2180WG. Other companies, such as Samsung, have recently introduced versions of this technology. This should push prices down (the Samsung model cost less than 1/3 the price of a comparable NEC monitor).

This system offers local dimming technology and can achieve 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. True actual black levels (the "Holy Grail" of LCD) are attainable by shutting off a pixel's light source. This can eliminate the grayish black picture typical of many LCD HDTVs. Groups of LEDs can be locally controlled to produce more light, increasing the brightness when necessary.

The problem with conventional white LEDs is that their spectrum is not ideal for photographic reproduction because they are basically blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor on top. Their color spectrum has two peaks, one at blue and another at yellow. White LEDs that are based on a group of red, green and blue LEDs are ideal for the RGB color filters of an LCD and can result in the most saturated colors. Sony's "Triluminos" LED backlight system is an example of this technique.
Sometimes, these HDTVs have a row of LEDs across the top and bottom of the display. This improves the brightness and color reproduction, and enables almost complete uniformity across the display.

LED backlights are much more efficient that alternative techniques. And since the LED backlight waste less energy, less heat is generated, that must be managed with air conditioning. LED backlights offer a long operating lifetime of more than 50,000 hours (more than 25 years of use at a rate of 5 hours a day).

LED backlit systems may not show well in a typical retail environment. Typically, the screens are somewhat reflective in order to achieve the high contrast ratio, and subsequently, a brightly lit showroom may not flatter this technology. In a more typical less-lit environment, this problem should not be as noticeable.

Engineering Concerns

The electrical engineering is simpler with LED backlights. Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCF) require high AC voltages (1,500 VAC) at startup, and operating voltages of 700 VAC or more. When the lamp is new it may take much less voltage to start, but with age the voltage requirements usually increase, complicating a designer's problem. An electroluminescent panel requires a voltage of about 100 VAC @ 400 Hertz.

A power inverter (to generate VAC) is needed for both CCF and electroluminescent panels to operate with a DC power supply. This is a significant expense, in cost, size, and weight of the system. The best inverter for this application permits the output voltage to automatically increase as the lamps age, extending the useful life of the lamps.

LCD systems with LED backlighting utilize low voltage DC, usually 12 or 24 VDC. This results in a smaller, simpler, and more reliable system. LED backlit systems must be well cooled or their performance can suffer. The LEDs generate less heat than CCF lamps, but the heat is very concentrated. Operating at high temperatures reduces the LED lifetime and shifts their light spectrum, while reducing output luminance.

OLED

A new technology that you will be hearing about in the future is Organic LED (OLED). This technology has a completely different backlight technology, it doesn't need one. Because of this, they draw much less power. And because there is no backlight, an OLED system has a larger viewing angle than an LED system. An OLED display is much thinner than an LCD display. The response time for OLED is faster than normal LCD screens. An average of 8 to 12 milliseconds in response time is normal for a LCD compared to 0.01 milliseconds in response time for an OLED.

Sony introduced an 11" HDTV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. The new 11" Sony TV is called the "XEL-1". It's very thin (1/10") and currently sells for $2500. Samsung demonstrated a 31" OLED HDTV with 1080P resolution at a tradeshow in Asia in November. LG, Toshiba, Matsushita (Panasonic), and others are investing hundreds of millions of dollars, developing this extremely promising technology. Toshiba has plans to sell a 30" OLED display in 2009. Samsung has announced they will sell large screen OLED HDTVs in 2010.

OLED displays have already been used for some time in digital cameras, cell phones and other devices with relatively small panels, because they are very energy efficient, which is very important in portable devices.

In theory, OLED displays can be more inexpensively manufactured than LCD or plasma displays, meaning that they should not be as expensive. Remember that the first large LCD and Plasma displays were much more expensive when they were first introduced.

Against this TV, I owned a Samsung 1080i HD television picture tube and the difference is obvious. IfThey want cool and dark gray, Samsung may be for you but this image and it works best with colored scenes. You will see a marked difference in color quality when watching baseball. The colors are just sharper on this LG. I am a fan of gmaer and Blu-ray Watcher. The only reservation I have is the sound quality is nothing special. With a Blu-ray in the PS3, and with my HDMI cable, I never had a problem with the sound. And 'only with cable or a regular DVD, if ITurning the TV considerably. The tone will be strong enough to give a tho during the action scenes start. So, as I said, there is a big problem for me.

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. Still debating what model to buy, THIS IS IT!
After spending way too much time researching and viewing these TVs at big box stores, I eventually bought this set from Amazon, and could not be happier.

I was in the plasma vs LCD debate for a while and decided that I needed/wanted the brightness of an LCD, didn't want to worry about any burn in issues (I know they are almost non-existent today anyway). I wanted 1080p and most plasma sets with 1080p are close to this price point as well. I debated for about a month between last years ln52a630 and the ln52a750, and which one to buy. The matte screen on the 630 was its highlight for me, but there was a sacrifice in the contrast ratio and other miscellaneous little "bells and whistles". The A750 being the more expensive model, the price point dropped so much, it was now pretty much an even swap. Hearing about the problems associated with the 750 including glare, halo and TOC flaking issues, I decided the 630 with its matte screen was the TV for me.

So, I price shopped the A630 for a few weeks until I stumbled across the new version of the set, the ln52b630. A little more money is WELL spent when upgrading to this TV. The contrast ratio is double 40,000:1 vs 80,000:1, and even dominates last years 50,000:1 A750's contrast ratio. Again, this TV also has the MATTE SCREEN! Almost no glare issues in my very bright viewing room, that has multiple windows and a sliding glass door.

The TV's picture quality is the best my friends and I have seen so far from an LCD. Deepest blacks and brightest brights are the comments I have been hearing when people see this TV in operation. The clarity in blu-ray 1080p with 120hz is breathtaking, you almost don't want to take your eyes off the screen. I have it connected to Dish Network's HD service and the PQ in 1080i is also superb, a slight loss in clarity and blur in fast moving sequences that is non-existent in 1080p. Standard def programing also looks great as well.

As far as audio, I have it setup through surround sound, so I cannot comment.

I have yet to connect an ethernet cable to use those features as well.
**UPDATE** I have attached the ethernet cable and the "infolink" features do work as advertised. It is a nice feature, news stories, temperature/weather, stocks all positioned in the corners of the screen. Will i ever use it, probably not. But, it works as advertised. I wish it was a way to update firmware for the TV rather than for these features.

The USB media port is another excellent feature. It allows you to play movies, music and pictures directly from the side of the TV with a USB flash drive or external hard drive. It will play almost any codec you throw at it, supposedly even x264(HD), have not been able to test this.

The remote is nicely designed and easy to use. Samsung eliminated the dreaded "click-wheel' on this years new models.

Delivery: Pilot was my shipping service, and I cannot say anything bad about the service. The delivered early and made the necessary phone calls to arrange delivery. The box was in great shape, as well as the TV inside.

Awesome TV
We were looking for a 55" matte screen lcd tv, but there doesn't seem to be any. I came across this 52" & took a chance, I couldn't find it in our local stores. I am very pleased with it, the picture is great. I am not an expert, so I can't give a detailed review. I can say that my husband said it has a heck of a picture (the HD is great).
I also wanted to comment on the delivery. I have read reviews on other tvs that gave bad reviews to pilot service. When I first got the email saying it would be delivered by pilot, I expected the worst. There service was great, they set it up in the room I requested, attached the stand & checked for a blue screen & I verified no damage before I signed. They also took away the packaging.
Also, Kudos to Amazon. I ordered the TV on Wednesday & it was delivered Friday. I couldn't ask for more. I am happy with the tv & Amazon's service.
Samsung LN52B630 is Awesome - We love it!
Background:
I have been researching and holding out for a new TV upgrade over the past 2 years. Samsung was one of the very few manufacturers that offered the matte non-glare screens, which is necessary in our sunlight-filled living room. But I was always waiting for the right price. So when I was about to get the LN52A630, I heard about the new B series being released in 2009. So I had to wait for it with 120Hz of refresh and an upgrade from a dynamic contrast ratio of 40,000:1 to 80,000:1. Plus the look and shape of the B series seemed so much nicer to me than the A series. So Amazon had offered a free Sony blu-ray player with the purchase of certain Samsung models (including the LN52B630), and that was my cue to finally place my order on 7/4/09.

Delivery:
When I placed our order I originally set the delivery date for 7/15/09. Once I got the CEVA tracking number from Amazon's shipping notification email, I started to track our TV. It turns out one of their warehouses is located in PA and very close to NJ. Our TV was right in our vicinity on 7/7/09. So I gave CEVA a call about delivering early and they were more than happy to deliver the TV on 7/10/09. The delivery went well, and the communication I had with CEVA was great. The guys brought the TV up three flights of stairs, set up the TV on the stand, gently placed the TV on our console, plugged it in and then turned it on...

Product:
Picture - We started to switch channels to see how it looked. The picture is truly amazing. The default settings really do make movies look like a soap opera, which is really weird and fascinating at the same time. It does take some time to find the right settings for your environment and input type. It's great that once the settings are adjusted for a certain input it keeps the settings. There are so many different settings as well, which allow for a lot of flexibility to adjust for a certain device input. For cable we have the TV set on natural and AMP on clear. HD cable is great and standard cable is pretty good on a huge LCD screen. XBOX is on game mode and looks wonderful. My husband was dying to try Call of Duty on it and was totally blown away by the colors and picture on the screen. When it was time to check out the blu-ray, we played Baraka (which I totally recommend to appreciate the 1080p experience). It was unreal! The picture was stunning and the detail was unbelievable. It was like we were there in person.

Sound - Even though we have our B630 hooked to our surround sound receiver, I tested the sound from the TV. It's not bad and the volume is pretty decent, actually pretty loud even at half way.

Other - The B630 is a really attractive TV. Everyone has commented on the touch of red and thinks it's really cool. The available inputs are quite sufficient. Swivel stand is terrific for when I'm in the kitchen cooking or to just swivel around dependent on my whereabouts. The swivel stand is also a plus when getting to the back of the TV to easily work on the cables and inputs. Viewing angles are pretty good. Matte non-glare screen is wonderful too; there is no need to shut the shades during the day any more. Tested out the USB input with an external hard drive on media play and found the response time pretty fast for a television. The media play mode is quite intuitive and easy to use. Photos look amazing as well. I did notice the auto dimming during credits of movies and black screens. This happens when the Energy Saving option is used. We set the option to off and now the dimming is non-existent. InfoLink via ethernet is a nice feature, but limiting. I hope that Samsung makes an update to allow more widgets and online viewing. BTW, the ethernet is great for getting available firmware updates from Samsung. Firmware v1009 was available for download and the update was quick and seamless. Since I didn't have the TV long enough, I don't know what the firmware update improved, but the TV is working just fine.

We love our Samsung LN52B630. I have to shamefully admit that I have fallen asleep in front of TV almost every night for the past 12 days. My husband would normally be jealous, but he also shares the same feelings I have for our new TV. We highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. The TV has surpassed all of our expectations. Amazon has allowed us to have it at a terrific price and offered free great white glove delivery service as well. It's a winning combination and we couldn't be happier.

Adequate, but be aware of numerous limitationsSony DAV-HDX576WF Home Theater SystemOverview:Another "Home Theater in a Box" design (HTIB), the SonyDAV-HDX576WF tries to be all things to all people and doessatisfactorily in some areas and poorly in others, so a mixed bag. Thebasic components are the following:(1) Receiver (Main Unit). You get a basic 5.1 surround soundreceiver facilitating six sources or inputs: DVD, TUNER, AUX,SAT/CABLE, TV, and DMPORT. The DVD player and AM/FM tuner are built into the receiver. These internal sources in more detail are configuredas follows: * DVD: The internal DVD has five trays to hold five DVDs or CDs.The DVD outputs 5.1 surround sound through the 576 wireless surroundsound speaker system, and outputs video three ways: HDMI, component, orcomposite. You can use the DVD/CD player to play Data-CD or Data-DVDdisks that have MP3 song files or JPEG image files.* TUNER: The internal FM tuner stores 20 stations, and the AMtuner stores 10. Reception is strong and clear if the antennas arepositioned well.The other four sources facilitated by the receiver are external(AUX, SAT/CABLE, TV, DMPORT). Three of the four external sources areaudio only (AUX, SAT/CABLE, TV). One is both audio and video (DMPORT),but the video is composite quality only. The front stereo speaker stands have to be assembled,which takes a little time, with one part about threading the wire intothe stand not quite so obvious. Once all connections are made, setupgoes fairly well. The autocalibration mic has plenty of cord (perhaps13-14 feet) to work even a large den. The mic at least gets theestimated distances pretty good, but the individual speaker levelsettings were way off. I had to go back and redo all levels manually. Idid this autocalibration several times just to make sure I had notmissed anything, and every time I still had to adjust the levels of thespeakers manually. You might have to do this as well.(3) Wireless Surround. Surround sound to the rear speakers iswireless. The main unit comes with a wireless transceiver thatbroadcasts surround audio on the 2.4 GHz band to the surround ampwireless receiver. The surround amp is quite oddly shaped, to be honest(over a foot long! 13.5" x 3.5" x 4" LxWxH). The surround speakers, infact, are wired. That is, these speakers are hooked into this oddlyshaped surround amp by running speaker wires from wherever the surroundamp is to each speaker's terminals. Hence, the surround sound is only"partially" wireless. Also, seems that Sony has not provided enoughwire really to run the speakers, especially not if you have to dosomething like go up and over a door frame. I had to add a length of myown speaker wire to get to a corner just 12 feet away as the crowflies. Setting up the wireless system is straightforward, and,following instructions carefully, goes without a hitch. You have threeID switches (A, B, C) to choose from to match up among your wirelessunits (to distinguish from other possible S-AIR units in theneighborhood, but the conflict could hardly occur given limitations ofrange, unless in a small apartment).(4) Digital Media Port Adaptor. This is a fancy name for an MP3dock. The dock is connected to the main unit via a proprietary cablethat carries audio and video (composite quality only). Thoughadvertised for Apple iPod, the unit basically really is for Sonyproducts. The main unit's remote controls many elements of the MP3transport (Play, Stop, Pause, Track Forward, Track Back) and menu(Previous Menu, Next Menu, Up Folder/Item, Down Folder/Item).(5) S-AIR Receiver. This wireless unit looks like a table radio,and that basically is its function. You have a small, self-amplifiedstereo speaker system that receives its sound from the 576 main unit.You can set up the S-AIR unit in two modes:* "Party Mode." The S-AIR joins in with the main unit and tunes in whatever the main unit is doing.* "Separate Mode." The S-AIR operates independently of the main unit.Buttons on the top of the S-AIR unit control transport functions ofthe source dialed in on the S-AIR when in "Separate Mode." For example,if someone is watching a DVD movie on the main unit in the den, someoneelse in a different room with the S-AIR receiver theoretically could belistening to the main unit's FM tuner and changing stations, or can belistening to a playlist on the MP3 player in the main unit's MP3 dockand controlling transport, such as play, pause, stop, previous and nexttrack. Finally, the S-AIR even can function when the main unit is off(in "Standby" mode). This option is set in the main unit's system menu.Evaluation:(1) Audio. The sound is generally satisfactory, being smooth andfairly accurate if the bass is not pushed. Good, flat sound overallprobably is the chief factor that sets this HTIB apart from others inthe class. Two caveats apply, one minor, the other more serious.* Subwoofer. First, on the minor side, the passive subwoofer isdecent for musical frequencies, even though still a little soft andmuddled for my tastes (not quite punchy enough). This subwoofer,however, is at a distinct disadvantage with handling the boom, thunder,and roar of low frequency movie sound effects. Fortunately, I justhappened to have a Velodyne CT-100 active subwoofer lying around thathas sophisticated circuitry allowing speaker level inputs with audiopass through. So I took the speaker level subwoofer out from the Sony576 straight into the Velodyne, then passed through the same signal onout to the Sony passive subwoofer. (In this way the Sony amp sees noextra impedence load at all, so is completely unaware of the Velodyne'sexistence in the circuitry.) I have the Velodyne set to kick in only atthose lower frequencies for movie sound effects, and the Sony subwooferhandling just the higher musical frequencies. With this adaptation, Iam more satisfied with the audio performance, especially action movies.Your requirements and tastes may be different.* Equalization. Though the 576's sound is generally OK, just alittle dash of EQ would have gone a long way to really making hershine. One distinct downside to the 576 is that the audio allows no EQsettings of any kind anywhere--not even those cheap presets found onmany HTIB (such as "Rock," "Classical," "Easy Listening," "Stadium,""Theater"). The user has no option to adjust any EQ. This inability isquite significant given that any room anywhere of any size andconfiguration will have its own "sound print" (frequency difficiencies)de facto that need to be compensated for to have accurate, clean sound.(2) Wireless. The S-AIR wireless system broadcasts on the 2.4 GHzband. When some 576 users reported no conflict with their 2.4 GHzwireless computer networks, I thought I was free and clear. Not so. TheS-AIR circuitry is supposed to search out a clearer signal in itsfrequency range to avoid such conflicts, but mine just did not work. Idefinitely had wireless conflicts with my computer network, and theS-AIR never did get happy until I completely relocated my computerwireless setup. Therefore, I would advise caution about considerationof this HTIB with its wireless surround if you are running anythingwireless at 2.4 GHz in the same room or nearby (including phones).(3) S-AIR Receiver. All sounds very promising with this S-AIRreceiver, which is sort of like a remote radio, but reality bites. Ifound the S-AIR unit in the end a poor system and rather useless. Iwill mention several critical items that seemed to doom the unit for myuse anyway:* Performance. The S-AIR unit really does not work well. Themaximum reception distance is 25-27 feet, and that is line of sight.Somewhere between 27-30 feet, the unit no longer can lock in thesignal. I can lock in from my den to my dinette wetbar, which is about27 feet and line of sight. If I move just a few feet more to the ACsocket on the far dinette wall, about 30 feet, the unit simply refusesto lock in. My two cordless phones in the den and dinette are 900 MHz,so not in conflict. To facilitate the wireless of the 576, I moved my2.4 GHz computer wireless network out of the den due to conflictsbetween the computer wireless and the 576 wireless. Even after theS-AIR unit locks in, the S-AIR unit is too sensitive; weakened signalstrength causes easy loss of the signal. Even when you inadvertentlywalk in front of the unit, sometimes that is enough to cause the unitto loose its signal. Imagine if you had a party with lots of peoplemoving around. The Sony S-AIR brochure shows the main unit operatingsubunits all over a two-story house. That is a pure joke in myexperience. I have a two-story house. I can barely get the S-AIR unitoperating even in the bedroom that is immediately over the den wherethe 576 main unit is. Even in that bedroom the signal sporadically getslost after locking in. As a result, my S-AIR unit is gathering dust,simply non-functional in my house. Your mileage may vary, but I wouldadvise not making any decision about the 576 on the basis of theadditional S-AIR receiver unit alone, or even as a deciding factor. Onematter to consider is if you are in an apartment. The S-AIR might workjust fine at the shorter ranges in many apartments, where den andbedroom are just a wall away, for example. Still, I would advisecaution and not being too optimistic about its functionality orcapability.* Controls. The S-AIR is meant to control sources from the mainunit, including the MP3 player in the docking station. Incredibly,however, while the S-AIR can control basic transport of the MP3 player,such as Play, Pause, Stop, Previous/Next Track, the S-AIR has no menucontrol. You cannot select a different album or playlist, for example.Thus, if you happen to be only one track from the end of a playlist oralbum the last time the MP3 was stopped, and hit Play on the S-AIR inanother room, you get that one remaining song, and "that's all folks!"Lack of MP3 menu navigation in the control setup of the S-AIR is a hugeoversight on the usability of the S-AIR unit for accessing the MP3player remotely.* Remote. The S-AIR unit does not have its own remote control.This omission is another important oversight, in my opinion. If you arein a room with an S-AIR unit operating and have to get up and walk overto the unit to turn down the sound just to answer the phone, the senseof user-friendly goes down decidedly.* Sound. The S-AIR unit's audio is distinctly muddled, which is asurprise given that the main unit does fairly well. The S-AIR unit isway too heavy on bass and sounds like listening through a pillow on thehigher frequencies. Further, just like the main unit, the S-AIRReceiver does not have any EQ controls. So the user is simply stuckwith that muddled sound.(4) Remote. The main unit remote does come capable of HDMI functionfor the Sony "Bravia" sync. If you have all Sony components, you willappreciate this feature. In the main, however, this particular Sonyremote suffers from serious design and layout flaws and immediatelythreatens any sense of being user friendly at first sight. Fourexamples will suffice:* Size. The main problem is the tiny body. The remote is 8.25"long, which is a deceptive figure, because all the buttons are crammedinto only 5.75" of the top surface. The bottom 2.3" is completelyblank. Further, the remote is only 1.8" wide. All of the options andcontrols of an entire home theater system have been compressed like atrash compactor into a very small space. Further crammed in are theadditional functions of the wireless system and the Sony proprietary"Bravia" system, which syncs various Sony components. The end result isthat surface buttons and screened letters of this remote are so smalland compacted even Peter Pan would be sorely challenged to use thedevice.* Inconsistencies. Inconsistencies abound. For some menus, youhave to press the "System Menu" button buried in the middle section ofall the buttons. Yet, for other menus, you have to press the "Display"button below and to the right of the control ring.* Interface. A poorly integrated user interface also afflicts thisremote. For example, what in the manual are called the main unit's"inputs" or "sources" are accessed through the remote's "Function" areawith its dual plus/minus buttons. Say what? Further aggravating thesystem setup, the main unit's various inputs cannot be accesseddirectly on the remote, but have to be toggled through by pressing theplus/minus buttons multiple times. This one item alone makes recordingmacros from the Sony remote to a universal remote a pain of repetition,involving redundant multiple steps over and over again to get to theright input source in various macros.* Backlit. The 576 remote is not backlit. This problem is a killerdue to the physical nature of the remote layout. Sony has produced aremote with black keys on a black face crammed onto a tiny surfacearea. These keys literally completely disappear with any lowering oflight levels in the room, especially watching movies. Guessing is areal crapshoot, since hitting the wrong key in such a small space is soeasy. Good thing I already had a bright, backlit universal remote intowhich to program all the necessary Sony functions.(5) Digital Media Port Adaptor. The video out of the MP3 dockingstation is NOT compatible with the newer series iPods beginning withthe iPod "Classic" and those related models of the Nano, iPhone, oriTouch. These newer Apple products require an Apple authentication chipfor the Apple's iPod video out to work with third-party docks.Apparently, the Sony 576 does not have this Apple chip. Sony clearlyintended to advertise their dock as accommodating the Apple iPod, sincethe iPod logo is seen all over the 576's packaging and advertisements.Nowhere, however, does any advertising, packaging, manual, or evenslips of paper alert the consumer to this fundamental videoincompatibility with the newer iPods from the "Classic" forward. The"Classic" iPod was out well before the Sony 576, so Sony at least hadtime to insert a piece of paper somewhere in the box or manual, or tomake this clear post-purchase, and should make this clear in currentmarketing, but they do not.(6) Connections. The main unit is intentionally crippled from beingan actual receiver. This status is true both for inputs and outputs.* Inputs. Note carefully that source inputs provide audio in only,not video (with the exception of the proprietary DMPORT for the MP3player). YOU HAVE NO VIDEO INPUTS OF ANY KIND FOR ANY SOURCE. Thiscomplete absence of any video input to the 576 cripples the unit as atrue receiver. You can input the audio of any device, but not itsvideo. Why not? A home theater setup by default is looking at multiplevideo systems (Cable, Satellite, VCR, DVR, PS3, Blu-Ray, etc.). Eventhe simplest old style systems had two video sources (Cable, VCR)!* Outputs. The 576 outputs go the opposite way. That is, whereasyou can output the video of the internal DVD player, you cannot outputits audio. Neither can you output the audio of the internal tuner.Further, you cannot pass through the sound of any source coming in. Whynot? What if you wanted to supplement the system's own sound with anauxiliary subwoofer, or better front stereo sound? What if you wantedto record the audio from the AM or FM tuner, such as a radio program,or from some other source coming in? No dice. The one solitary optionyou have is to use the miniature stereo phono headphone out on thefront of the unit, but this kills the sound out of the speakers, andrequires a preamp to boost the output level for decent recordingquality anyway.Not only is this Sony unit a theater in a box, this theater islocked in its box! Only audio in. Only video out. These are deliberateengineering choices intentionally crippling the system from even themost basic home theater audio/video needs outside the one function ofwatching a DVD movie. You cannot even get a simple cable video signaldirectly in (not even a simple 70 Ohm coaxial input).Thus, be aware that with the Sony 576, all video input in yourtheater setup must be provided by some other component. Mostimportantly in today's home theater, if you need to hook up multipleHDMI devices, you will have to depend on the HDMI inputs of some othercomponent, such as your TV, or another true receiver, or an HDMIswitcher hooked directly to your TV. In the same vein, you have no easyaccess to record the audio of any source, internal or external.(7) Digital Audio. The 576 does have one digital audio in, whichcan be either coaxial or optical. However, be aware that this digitalaudio in is hardwired to the TV input (because the 576 assumes the"Bravia" system TV connection). Thus, whatever component is the sourceof your digital audio, the input source of your audio on the Sony's 576display always will read "TV"--counterintuitive, not user-friendly, andclearly "Sony only" in design.(8) Manual. Manuals are manuals. I rarely mention them in reviews.With only a few exceptions, however, this Sony manual screams forcomment as a poster child for poor design, confusing discussion, andbad layout. An example of an exception would be the good discussion anddiagrams of surround sound speaker placement options. Such examples ofclarity, however, are rare. What are the problems?* Presentation. One major problem is that the manual suffers asplit personality and does not keep clear who is being addressed. Sonywas lazy. They tried to write three manuals in one. They have threedifferent HTIB models, the 277WC, 279W, and this one being reviewed,the 576WF. Instead of writing a manual for each system, they tried toconflate discussions of all three systems into one manual. What a mess!Every block diagram is repeated three times, which is visually tiringand confusing. Many instructions are repeated three times, except forthose that apply to two units, or those that apply to all three units.Talk about confusing! Trying to access the right information for yourparticular unit in the manual is sometimes an exercise in abjectfutility. You can waste five minutes or more reading something, whensuddenly you realize those paragraphs are not for your model! Thereader too easily can get lost even after only a few page turns tryingto remember whether the instructions being read at the moment are forthe 277, the 279, or the 576, or any combination of the three.Unbelievable.* Size. Another problem is that the manual is way too small. Thebooklet is only 5.75" x 8.5", that is, a typical 8.5 x 11 sheet ofpaper folded in half and turned vertically. Such a small format isnearly impossible to read, because Sony's choice of type size issomewhere between 6 to 8 point (no joke). The diagrams, likewise, whencrammed into such a small page format are quite small. Some explodedwiring diagrams are readable, but all diagrams of the backside of theamp are so minuscule they are literally impossible to read. The onlysalvation is to download Sony's pdf version of the manual from theirwebsite and magnify the size about 400%-600% to read the actual wordsover the port diagrams of the back of the unit--seriously.* Terminology. Confusing terminology creates a headache forunderstanding. One example is Sony's terminology for the wirelesscomponents of the system. What would a typical audio person think the"S-AIR receiver" is? The typical audio person is going to think thesubject is the system's main amp. Instead, Sony conflicts the audio andwireless terminology, forcing Sony to call the main amp not the"receiver," which is standard audio terminology, but the "S-AIR mainunit." Then, you have "S-AIR subunits," which is Sony lingo for variousother S-AIR devices, such as the wireless surround amplifier or thewireless, self-amplified speaker box. This wireless, self-amplifedspeaker box is what Sony means by "S-AIR receiver." Until you makeconcerted effort trying to retrain your audio lingo, the Sony lingo isplain hard to accommodate. The term "S-AIR receiver" simply causes aknee-jerk reaction of thinking about the system's main amp, not thedinky little box that parrots what the main amp is doing wirelessly.The most complicated example of confusing terminology in the manualis the discussion of audio. Three different sections completelyobliterate any semblance of simplicity.* Surround Sound. First, you have true 5.1 surround sound. Thisaudio feature is set up automatically at the beginning of the manualwith discussion of the supplied calibration mic that calculates speakerdistances and level settings. (Many HTIB now have this calibration micfeature.) Users might think they are done setting up their system'saudio. Oh, no! Not so fast.* Surround Sound--Again. Second, later on in the manual oneencounters another audio section, "Enjoying Surround Sound by UsingDecoding Mode." Is this still about additional steps to take in settingup the 5.1 surround sound? Who knows? Sony is silent about therelationship, although the reader encounters the words "surround sound"in the title. So, maybe this section is about further configuration ofthe surround sound settings? The novice user easily would think, "Hmm,I guess here is where I now refine the setup of my 5.1 surround sound;the calibration mic must have only got me started." In fact, thissection is not about true 5.1 surround sound. This section is aboutcheap surround EFFECTS. Sony is trying to offer chintzy ways tosimulate some kind of sound coming out of the rear speakers from mono(think AM radio) or two-channel sound sources. The reader encountersreally esoteric lingo, such as "A.F.D. Multi," "Pro Logic," "PLIIMovie," "PLII Music," etc. My guess is that the general consumer buyinga HTIB would have a hard time distinguishing all this hoopla, or evenwhen to implement these audio settings (all the time? permanentsettings? only on occasion?). What's worse, these audio gimmicks do notwork most of the time, leaving one not hearing anything at all out ofthe surround speakers in the first place. The effects are poorlyengineered, poorly explained, and basically useless.* Sound Mode. Third, on top of this "surround sound" (read "soundeffects") jargon, Sony has layered a third level of complication. In adifferent part of the manual Sony presents a "Selecting the Sound Mode"section. What is this? Surround sound redux, or something elsealtogether? No word is given on the relationship of this section aboutaudio to any of the others. The reader simply learns of a dedicated"Sound Mode" button on the remote. The remote button toggles amongthree options, "Auto," "Movie," and "Music." What is this? Part of thesurround sound system? Part of the "A.F.D. Multi," "Pro Logic," etc.system? Is this "Sound Mode" button on the remote in addition to, inconcert with, or in spite of the "surround sound" choices identified as"A.F.D. Multi," "Pro Logic," etc., or the 5.1 surround sound system thecalibration mic set up automatically at the beginning? Sony has not aword to clarify these relationships among three layers of audiosettings presented in the manual. Thus, Sony presents a complicated andconfusing mixture of three layers of audio settings, what might beidentified more simply as SURROUND, EFFECTS, and MODE, but never onceexplains their relationships or interaction. (I have not even mentionedyet another section, "Enjoying Multiplex Broadcast Sound (Dual Mono)."There's a mouthful.)Wow. Could you possibly get more complicated or confusing? Anexperienced audio person could decipher all this and break down all theconstituent parts. For example, "PLII" is an allusion to Dolby ProLogic II, the second incarnation of the Pro Logic system; theexperienced audio person would know what that development was allabout, so would have a clue what that sound effect was trying toachieve. Yet, what an irony are all these complicated audio settings onthe 576! The HTIB design is marketed to the average, non-technicalconsumer who wants to avoid complicated setups of multiple audio andvideo components and confusing lingo. Sony could not have defeated thatpurpose more supremely than with their discussion of audio settings inthe 576 manual.Summary:Pros:(1) Inexpensive 5.1 surround sound with partially wireless surround(2) Good AM/FM tuner with strong reception(3) DVD/CD player capable of many formats, including playing music/image files(4) Docking station for MP3 player, controlled by main unit remote(5) Autocalibrating mic for setting up surround sound(6) Overall good sound quality, fairly accurate, flat(7) Main unit remote controls most MP3 player functions(8) Included S-AIR Receiver unit, when holding its signal, can operate independently of the main unit (even in "Standby" mode)Cons:(1) Ports prevent integrating even the most basic home theater components(2) Digital audio in (coaxial, optical) hardwired to "TV" input(3) Autocalibration gets distances, but seems to miss speaker levels(4) "Wireless surround" is only partially wireless, and provided speaker wires are not long enough even for typical setups(5) The 2.4 GHz wireless system can conflict with other 2.4 GHz devices(6) Passive subwoofer not really adequate to the task of movie sound effects(7) Neither main unit audio nor S-AIR Receiver audio have any EQ adjustments(8) S-AIR Receiver distance performance is inadequate, has noremote, no EQ controls, no menu controls for MP3 player functions, andmuddled sound(9) Main unit remote control is small, crowded, inconsistently implemented, with a poor user interface, and is not backlit(10) Digital Media Port Adaptor (MP3 docking station) is NOT video compatible with Apple iPod "Classic" and later(11) Manual conflates multiple models, is too small, and especially complicates audio settingsConclusion:I was downsizing my home theater setup on behalf of easier use forwife and friends and wanted to stay within a predetermined budget.Decent sound from the Sony 576WF main unit compels me to stay with thisHTIB, even though much that was promised was not delivered. My TV hadthe multiple inputs needed for various video feeds, as well as highquality audio out for any recording or other audio pass-throughfunctions. I was able to supplement the subwoofer performance with areally good unit I already had and leapfrog the poor remote with myuniversal remote. I know about audio, so the terrible manual was onlyfrustrating. I already was taking the S-AIR Receiver as a "gimme," so,that the unit is now sitting in a closet is just a mild disappointment,not a deal breaker. I was able to run the wires of the "wireless"surround speakers discretely, so hardly anyone will notice withoutscrutiny. I moved the conflicting computer wireless network setup outof the den so that the S-AIR surround amp could stay happy and hold itssignal. The one remaining problem unsolved is no video out from my iPodusing the included Sony dock. I probably will have to scrap the Sonydock just like the S-AIR Receiver. I have to keep in mind that not even"good money" can satisfy every whim, so, that I got by this cheaply fordecent movie watching and easier operation for family and friends is agoal achieved. Not a ringing endorsement, I know, but the wholeexperience was not a joy ride either. Very good system and delivers a lot for this price rangeI have owned this system for about a month now, and did a fairamount of research before settling on this. I am very happy so far withthe quality and features and think this is probably the best you can doin this price range. The picture quality is great, the sound quality iseven better. I have used it with CD's and my iPod quite extensively,and you can tinker with the various sound modes to find one that workswell for you. The iPod dock works great. The surround sound for moviesis very good and very powerful - the system has more power than we needfor our house which has a pretty large and vaulted living room. Unlikeour prior wireless surround system, the wireless speakers on this seemto get a very clear signal and don't have any delay or sound loss.There are only two differences between this model and the nextprice down, which is I believe the 279 model. This one comes with theS-Air unit, and on this you get speaker stands for two of the speakers.The S-Air units are $120 on their own, and the speaker stands are atleast $60 or so, so I think for another $100 this is a better system.Note that while the instructions say the speaker stands are for thefront speakers, you can actually use the speaker stands as yoursurround speakers in the rear - both the front and rear speakers areidentical in terms of wattage and impedance, they are just differentshapes, and we wanted the speaker stands to be used for the wirelessrear speakers and stand in the corners of the room. The S-Air unit isgreat too - it's like another speaker, and we have it in our kitchen,and it's wireless too, so you can listen to the music or the news andhave it on in another room too. Also, you can control the music fromthe S-Air - including controlling the iPod attached to the dock, andskip songs and control the volume, etc. We like it so much we're goingto buy another S-Air unit for another room. Otherwise, the two systemshave the exact same unit and speakers.We are very happy - it was easy to set up, it has been easy to use,the quality is good. We have our cable receiver hooked up to it, andthere is no delay when you want to turn on the surround sound whilewatching a TV broadcast, which happened on our old Samsung system.Highly recommended so far. Excellent productI had done a great deal of research and had narrowed my search downto this sony model and panasonic's equivalent. I chose this because ofthe wireless Air unit and the overall look. My biggest concern when Ipurchased was the wireless speakers conflicting with my wireless routerfor the computers and playstation as well as the wireless phonesrunning on the same frequency. I am glad to say there was no conflictwhat so ever and the speakers sound great. I would high recommend thisproduct to anyone looking to upgrade their sound system and not lookingto pay a thousand or more for a component unit. The remote is somewhatconfusing but has a lot of features once you get the hand of it. If you decide on this unit, which i would highly recommend, be sureto flip through the instructions whether or not your use them foractually putting everything together. There are a number of featuresand some do not include using the rear speakers depending on the inputtype used. So be sure if the rear speakers do not come on that you havethe proper settings selected. Overall, the sound is great. The speakers are crisp and the bass sounds fantastic. Definately a great deal.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Great for mini home theater
I've been an HDTV owner for six years and during that time, I've assisted about two dozen friends in their HDTV home theater setups. I've just upgraded to the Samsung LN52B750 and I couldn't be happier. For reference, I'm upgrading from a Samsung DLP and I own another Samsung LCD HDTV.

There's a lot that's misunderstood about this TV, so rather than the usual Pros and Cons, I'd like to share how I'm getting viewing value from this set.

First, if you're reading this, you're either already an LCD owner or have read about them - and have read about this new breed and if you're like I was, you're wondering what's what.

Color swirls - you never read about this, but if you've watched TV on an LCD set in the past, especially with standard def (SD) stations, you've seen it. The backgrounds look like compressed colors from jpg photo files. My earlier LCD HDTV (8ms response time) had it - this one simply does not. (I did have trouble watching compression artifacts in a movie from 1930 on TCM on this TV - but that movie was so hosed, I can't blame the TV only.)

Contrast - you've read by now that all LCD set makers lie about this. If you're confused and remember the old audio days, that works like this: You'd have a 35 watt RMS/channel amp (into 8 ohms). Some would lie and call it a 70 watt amp. Then lie some more and call it a 140 watt amp (how about 4 ohm speakers?). Then lie some more and refer to peak instead of RMS - and suddenly a 35 watt amp is legally lied about as a 200 watt amp. Now - I don't know the ins and outs of legal contrast lying, but I believe what I've read - it exists in this industry. This set is rated at a contrast of 150,000:1 - with every stretch of legal lying possible - the contrast on this set is amazing. I still cannot believe that it's an LCD. It's simply that good in terms of contrast. One plasma-owning friend insisted for a half hour that I was wrong, and had gotten a top line plasma.

Blur/response/lag - LCDs are noted for this weakness. Not this TV. Read on.

Quality of SD programs - some controversy exists. Not a problem on this TV. Read on.

240 Hz AMP - this is the most misunderstood feature I've read about on this TV. Nothing I've read in any review prepared me for what to expect. I was buying the TV partially for this feature, noting that depending upon whom you believe, you turn this feature on, off, on for movies but not sports, on for sports but not movies.

It's none of those on/off things. It's adjustable. Here are my simple recommendations based on my setup:

1. DirecTV.

I use a Dayton HDMI cable, also bought on Amazon (amazingly good cable - buy it), from my DirecTV HR20. I have the HR20 set up to display all resolutions in Native mode. The LN52B750 switches resolution so quickly that this is not a problem. Unlike earlier sets I've owned, the HDMI input on this TV accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p - the HR20 outputs all of those on HDMI. In DirecTV circles, it's well-known to set your TV and your HR20 to the TV's native resolution and turn Native output off on the HR20. This is because the HR20 is purportedly better at 3:2 pulldown processing than the top of the line chipsets/firmware used only a few years ago, in that the pulldown is done between the steps of converting the satellite signal to TV frames - and my own experience agreed with that.

However, I offer this simple advice - set your HR20 output to Native, all resolutions, and set the B750's 240Hz processing to: Blur=5, Judder=3 - and you'll be exceptionally happy with the results from all program input. My Boston Legal reruns have never looked so good and they appear on some of the poorest-signal (highly compressed) stations in my lineup. So, with this setting, SD as well as satellite 720p and 1080i programs look great - not fake at all. (And all you have to do to see the controversy on this feature is to "turn it on" without customizing its adjustment - and wait for your eyes and stomach to turn.)

I played baseball as a kid - loved it. Still remember what a ball looks like going through the air. When you're at the right angle, you see a stobe of blur and clear, red stitches. With the Blur=5,Judder=3 adjustment, I have finally seen just that watching a dropping curve ball (720p source). Any higher or lower, the ball looks wrong - oh, yes, very exciting - but wrong.

So I strongly recommend this set for its 240 Hz processing - providing you are willing to change those two parameters slowly and study a lot of source material to dial in what's right. I contend that if you're a DirecTV HR20 owner, I've just given you the key to really great SD and HD viewing.

And don't fear about those great blurs being missed from movies that wanted it there - Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire looked really great in that regard.

BTW - resolution switching on this set is FAST - you'll experience little or NO extra delay when switching resolutions. (Not true on my older HDTVs.)

2. HTPC (Home Theater PC)

I use a Mac mini. I know, people hate them, you pay too much for Macs, yadda, yadda, yadda. The Mac mini is THE correct form-factor for a HTPC. You can find duplicates of this form-factor - and directly comparable features - in the Windows world for **exactly** the same price as a Mac mini - so, 'nuff said on price.

But - so far as a I know, only the built-in Apple DVD Player plays movies at 24 frames/second. Last I checked (and this may have changed by now), all other software (Win) does playback at TV rates: 60 frames/sec, with progressive scanning, etc.

Now - I'm not explaining all of this to brag about Macs - this is all about Blu-Ray vs. DVDs.

The de-judder tech being targeted by the 240 Hz processing is all about reconciling Blu-Ray 24 fps (read: real theater) vs. 30/60 fps (read: TV signals).

I don't own a Blu-Ray player - my gut, after all of these years, is still telling me to wait for the right features and prices.

But, I do use a Mac mini for my HTPC and if you do - or are considering one - here is my recommendation (based on Leopard 10.5.7): set the DVD Player to Best Quality Deinterlacing, set the Mac Display preferences to 1920x1080 at 24 Hz (it's progressive by default), and feed that into your LN52B750 with the 240 Hz options set to Blur=5 or 6, Judder=6 or 7 - and your jaw will drop. If you have a copy of Moulin Rouge - use it as your reference for the settings. I particularly recommend noting that you'll actually see the dust kitties on the floor in the Tango Roxanne chapter (among other things) and also suggest that you'll really love the depth and details of the stars, lace and glitter in Your Song.

With those settings you'll not only get a great HTPC, but you'll get possibly the best standard DVD player you've ever owned. Before the LN52B750, it was very good - now it's really incredible. Ghost Dog and Moulin Rouge on DVD are now completely three dimensional (not exaggerated foreground fakey - actually 3-D looking) - I didn't even know that this sort of picture was possible from a DVD.

I think my setup shows how well this TV works with a 1080p/24 fps source - I can only imagine that Blu-ray looks even better.

3. Sound

People complain about the sound quality of the LN52B750. I don't know. I haven't used a TV for sound in 8 years. I don't wish to sound snobbish, but really - you're spending a boatload on your TV and input sources, why listen to TV speakers?

I don't go for surround sound. I'm an audio purest that prefers the highest fidelity stereo. To each his own, but if you're like me, here's the secret on that: route the optical audio out from the LN52B750 into the Mac mini, not from the DirecTV's optical port. This routing is surprisingly better. Use Rogue Amoeba's free LineIn software, set all buffers to default values except for output - use a buffer size of 2048 - convert the optical to copper stereo and pipe that into your stereo system. This is the best TV-to-stereo sound I've gotten in 8 years.

I'm using large electrostatic panels, driven by a 400 watt (peak)/channel amp and a 2 kW servo-controlled subwoofer. You hear sound from all over the room and the depth and spacial qualities are great. I recommend more money into a better stereo and less room wiring over surround sound, but that's just me. To each, his own.

4. Miscellaneous Adjustments

Next, some words on clouding, screen adjustment and glare.

Glare - I don't have any. Yeah - I can see some reflection in the screen at various times of the day. The picture quality is so deep - as is the contrast - that I don't even notice glare, if it is there. And the screen is neither glossy nor matte. It feels glossy, but is low-glare like matte, but sharp and clear like glossy. They're telling the truth on that improvement.

Clouding - let the set burn in for a few days before looking. This is great advice for any large LCD, by the way. Clouding - I don't have any.

Adjustments: Go. Very. Slow. I'd recommend not touching a thing for a full 24 hours of viewing. So far, I've turned down the backlight and the contrast and turned up the brightness. I'm not going to suggest numbers here, though - there are too many factors, such as your room, that will dictate what's right. I will say that out of the box, the contrast is too high, as is the backlight (but not the brightness) - so, as I said: Adjust. Each. Parameter. Slowly. You'll be pleased.

5-26-09: Three things - absolutely *turn off* Dynamic Contrast and Edge Enhancement!! Also, Digital Noise Reduction (NR) defaults to auto - certainly on DVDs, this causes an electric sort of look to things like paper; better at Medium or High.

Color - I read a review that favored Auto over Native - I agree.

Film mode - It defaults to Auto2 (optimized for scrolling text). Use Auto1 (film optimized) - text looks just fine.

5. Internet

This is not a worthless feature. I thought it would be - but it isn't. If you're using a Mac mini and getting the net wirelessly, go to System Prefs->Network->Ethernet, and set DHCP with manual IP - set IP to 192.168.2.1 - then go to Sharing and share your Airport connection through the Ethernet. Run an Ethernet cable 100/1000BaseT type (looks like a big phone connector) from the Mac to the TV. Set the TV internet as follows: IP=192.168.2.2, mask=255.255.255.0, and BOTH Gateway and DNS Servers to 192.168.2.1 - and you're all set.

Note - this doesn't support your DLNA features into the TV - and if you have a HTPC, especially a Mac, you don't want that anyway. Your music files will all have to transcode to support the feature - stick with your native music format, and simply switch to Mac Front Row for your music listening. You'll get higher quality and you've already made those music import decisions - and I suspect the same is true if you're a Vista/Home Media user and that's your HTPC.

BUT - and this is a big BUT - if it's easy, hook up your Mac or other HTPC to share its internet connection. You already get your OS upgrades via the net, regardless of whether you prefer OS X or Windows. Well, guess what? This TV is at its heart, a whole lot of computing technology. Out of the box, my LN52B750 firmware was marked from 3-30-2009 - and last week (in May 2009), Samsung already had a firmware upgrade for this set. What did Samsung upgrade? I don't know and I don't care. I let my Windows XP and Mac OS X computers upgrade themselves all the time. These guys want to fix things for free, I don't argue - I take the fix.

Get it connected to the internet and you'll never have to sweat getting an upgrade or remember how to transfer it to your TV via a USB stick. For upwards of US$2k, I like not sweating things. BTW, please note that at this point, the TV doesn't seem to support automatic updates - so you still have to go over to that menu option. Not bad.

Having gotten that far, I tried out the Yahoo widgets. This is an underrated feature by far. I'm now set up to get the quick 5-day forecasts here, back where Mom is, and out where my company's other locations are. It puts the TV show being watched into its own shadowbox while viewing the widget. This is insanely faster and easier than using my Mac Dashboard or the DirecTV widget for the same thing - and I never lost track of my show and I never picked up a mouse.

Oh - I also used Yahoo News and Video to get the latest web video of the Hubble repairs during a long commercial break. Sure, it was low-res. But I did it with my remote, and not a mouse, and didn't lose track of time on the web looking at Hubble stuff during a commercial break.

So - I strongly recommend the internet connection option for this TV, too.

6. Heat

LCD sets get hot, the longer they're on. I burned out my first LCD HDTV from days-long ontime. I left this TV on for 50 hours straight. It is summer (here in the desert), and I do have my swamp cooler on - but this TV screen is still barely warm to the touch.

7. Trusting commercial reviewers

Anyone who publishes that they've tested the X-inch model of this set, but this one is the same - don't read them, don't believe them. Quality control for manufacturing LCD sets increases almost exponentially as you go up in size. Only trust reviews on the actual set you're looking at - not the next one over, not last year's model.

8. LCD response time

This set is rated at 2 ms. I've heard that's a lie in a review of 120 Hz sets - although the reviewer wouldn't mention manufacturers. That reviewer said that they were simply taking 8 ms panels, and rating them at 4 ms when doing 120 Hz processing - and so, while my TV was in transit, I rightly wondered if the 2 ms is simply the same math applied to an 8 ms screen at 240 Hz (4 time as fast as 60 Hz, four times as fast as 8 ms).

I have no earthly idea. All that I can say for a certain fact is that this thing is razor sharp and lacks the motion artifacts (and swirls) I've seen on my other 8 ms LCD HDTVs. I hope this helps, some, with that confusion.

9. Actual Size

I don't why it does this but it does: it sees my Mac via the DVI-HDMI connection and gives me a Fit Screen size adjustment. No more lost pixels, no more need for SwitchResX or DisplayConfigX. No such option from the DirecTV HDMI input. I don't know why.

But I do know this: for years, HDTV makers were hiding a bit of the edges from their input sources - causing no end of grief for HTPC owners. This set does away with all of those woes.

(**** UPDATE, May 23 - The Screen Fit option works with any HD source - DirecTV or HTPC. Switch to 480i input, and the screen fit option goes away. Also - when you get the typical HistoryHD show where they just stretch the letterbox picture horizontally, giving everyone that Pillsbury Doughboy face, you can fix that by quickly switching the TV to 4:3 mode. You end up with an HD in letterbox - not as good as full-screen HD, but way better than watching the Pillsbury Doughboy.)

10. Correct Adjustment.

They tell us that the only way to do this is with a TV tech, and to pay for it professionally. Believe them. This TV has no less than 9 adjustments for red, green and blue - add in brightness, gamma, etc and you have over a dozen adjustments there.

Think: 12-sided Rubic's cube - now you've got the idea.

So, I'm just adjusting the brightness/backlight/contrast myself. Independent reviewers all claim that the Samsung brand rocks right out of the box for color correctness. That wasn't true of my older Samsungs - it most certainly is for this one. The color just looks great.

13. The Remote

I had things down to just my Mac remote and my DirecTV remote. Now I've got that third remote happening again, to use some of this TV's cooler features. Just like most people use surround sound while I use stereo, it seems most people get integrated remotes instead of using several.

OK - I'm a Luddite or something. We use multiple remotes. (This one for music, sound, photos and DVD control, this one for DirecTV and now this one for switching source inputs and checking out my Yahoo widgets.) My wife and I just find this easier. So, if you're like us in that regard:

This is a great remote. It feels comfy in the hands like you wouldn't believe, it has backlighting, the buttons are big enough to read. What more can I say than that?

14. Viewing Distance

I watch mine at 12.5 feet from the screen. This is well within reason for this size TV. If you watch at a showroom, be prepared to pace off what your viewing distance will be. I often go through stores and see people judging HDTVs by being 8 feet in front of one, 12 feet in front of another. Don't ever do that. I cannot overstate the importance of judging TVs from the distance consistent with your own use.

15. Pilot Delivery

I got my LN52B750 via Amazon's supplied Pilot Delivery. These guys were great. Others have had issues, many haven't. Pilot seems to employ local guys for their white glove delivery. My local guys were great - 'nuff said.

16. 6/13/2009 edit - If you register your TV on the Samsung website, they give you an additional 3 months on your warranty.

Got this from Amazon at a good price,though I'm sure it will drop a little more as the year goes on.
This tv is spectacular! Absolutely stunning,jaw dropping picture. I can't say enough about it. Excellent blacks,infinitely tweakable to your liking.
When I first turned it on I had the "The Office" come on and I swear my mouth stayed open for a few minutes as it looked like Michael was in the same room as me! Lots of inputs and features to this set,internet connectivity,DLNA,home networking,wonderful subdued TOC which is grey instead of the red on last years 750. Very high gloss bezel,crystal neck stand which pivots. Screen is glossy,reflections are not an issue for me as I tend to watch in a darker room,but even with the drapes open, I don't see myself! AMP seems to work better in this set,as I also have an 4071 Samsung which has a slight problem with AMP,which has been well documented over at the AVSForums.

Just like anything else it is not perfect,hence the 4 stars instead of 5.
Sound is bad. I mean,you'll want to hook this up to a nice stereo system,or at the very least,a couple of powered computer speakers or some such set.
This tv attracts dust like nobodies business.Either that or my house is really dirty. Front panel controls (which would be rarely used anyway) are hard to tell where they are (lower right). Yahoo widgets,which are kind of cool when you first see them,are eh,no big deal. Maybe as more become available I'd be more excited.
There is no printed manual,it's on a usb drive,called an e-manual,and no it's not Spanish! There's some uneven lighting when screen is dark,(no signal)not sure if that's an issue for me yet,doesn't seem to affect any picture quality,but something to keep an eye on.

It is a 5 star tv,but the sound is what drops it 1. All other issues are no big deal.

This LCD really is great!
I know a lot of you are looking at a lot of hdtvs. Let me tell I looked at all the t.vs in best buy to see how they look. I saw the ln46b650 as it stood out from the rest with clarity. So i decided to take a gamble and pre order this one. I even owned a pn50a760 plasma and sent it back because it had poor clearity. This t.v has an extra setting for the upscaling which makes it ajust to the size making it a little clearer for normal dvds then the regular upscaling.
PROs for this t.v: Clearest picture i've seen so far for LCD. No artifacts on 240hz settings. The colors are bright and stunning. For you video game addicts. I have a ps3 and a xbox360 hooked up to it and let me tell you the game looks crisp and has no lag whats so ever.
Cons:The internet capabilities and media stuff arent exciting. Only thing its good for is maybe knowing the weather and uploading pictures on the tv when having family events. When people speak while playing video games they seem a little quiet other then that they sound pretty decent. The blacks are probally the best you can get for lcd but its still not as black as plasmas can get. Only other thing is its viewing angles, its best to sit at a centerish seat.

THe cons are very very minor overall this t.v I will recommend to anyone looking for something great in all area's for the price. Regular Dvds look nice a sharp and blue rays look even better. Even my girlfriend that knows nothing about t.vs says WOW thats a lot better then the other one we sent back. YOu could also see the jealousy in my friends eyes.

Excellent TV
Update May 3, 2009:

My original review of the TV was negative due to a problem of dimming during dark scenes. But few days ago Sony released a software patch to correct the problem and it worked for me. Now, the auto dimming can be turned off by setting the "Adv. Contrast Enhancer" to Off. Also, even when it's turned On, it doesn't behave like it did pre- patch, it now dims gradually rather than abruptly and it doesn't dim as much as it did before. Thank you very much Sony, I'm updating my rating to 5-star.

I'm very happy with the TV now that the auto dim is fixed. If you own the TV and having problems with the dimming, go to the support section of Sony's site to download the patch and the instructions on how to apply it. You will need a USB thumb drive formatted in FAT32, but if you don't have it, Sony will mail you one if you call their customer support.

When I purchased this TV few days ago, there were no reviews here since it's just been recently released into the market. I, however, looked at the reviews of the previous model (KDL-40V4100) and didn't find any serious complaints so I went ahead and purchased this TV. I regret my purchase and will explain why.

This is my third LCD TV -- the others are early generations LCDs from Sharp and Sony and they are still working great, but they are no match for the picture quality of this new Sony. There are a lot of good things about this TV and I would have given it 5 stars if not for one serious flaw.

The TV dims during dark scenes. And sadly it doesn't do it gradually, it happens abruptly 6 seconds after the start of a dark scene and it returns to normal lighting abruptly about 0.35 seconds after end of a dark scene. It seems to happen regardless of the source of input (I tested it with composite, and HDMI) and it happens on broadcast channels and cable and regardless of the "picture mode" and other video settings. There is no way to disable it. If you're watching a movie with lots of dark scenes, it's going to be a very annoying experience.

Take this example, while watching a documentary on first gulf war, there was a lot of night vision camera scenes and the TV keeps dimming during the lengthy dark scenes and when it does that, you can barely make out any details even with Gamma set at max. The dimmer kicking in and out is annoying by itself, much less the picture quality when it dims.

I contacted Sony support and they seemed clueless and recommended I initiate a repair request. I did an internet search only to discover many Bravia models suffer this problem. I initially thought I had a defective unit, but now I think it was intentionally designed like this.

Samung is the way to go.
I purchased the 40V5100 but ended up with a Samsung LNB630. Here's a copy of my Amazon review of the Samsung:

I will echo what the first reviewer, Rich Vergo said. Like he did, I initially purchased the Sony KDL-40V5100 (Sony's 2009 competition to the LNB630) and was fairly content. I originally thought about buying the Samsung LN40B650 but its higher price tag pushed me towards the Sony. I was pretty happy until I kept seeing the Samsung panel at a couple friends' houses. It didn't take too long to realized the difference between the two is so staggering I knew that I would not be able to live with the Sony set. Fortunately, I found the so similar B630 for the same price I paid for the V5100.

I spent about three weeks experimenting and reading message boards to get a good configuration on the Sony. However, right out of the box the B630 image is breathtaking, to say the least. It's so crisp, the image appears three dimensional and the colors are so vivid. Like Rich said, in comparison to the B630, the Sony LCD's look like old technology. Everything I've watched so far looks way better; Heck, even the Direct TV guide looks better on the Samsung.

If you are in the market for a TV in this size and price range, I would highly recommend it. Even if you're considering saving $100 or so on a cheaper TV, I think the difference in quality is easily worth the difference in price. You might also want to look at the slightly more expensive B650 series. It's clear panel will provide a little better picture but will reflect more glare. I went for the B630 because it was $200 cheaper than the 650. The difference wasn't quite worth it.

I've only found two negatives so far. First, the buttons on the panel are not buttons at all but rather some sort of touch sensitive mechanism and it's almost impossible to see them unless you have a spotlight and get up close. This renders them virtually useless. Second, the mounting holes are too close together and located too much towards the center of the TV. My current mount isn't the greatest and the way the holes are setup makes the TV unstable. I will probably need to buy a new mount.

Excellent TV, Auto contrast can now be turned off!
First things first, THEY FIXED THE AUTO-CONTRAST! I have nothing but good things to say about this TV. Do not be fooled by the 1 star ratings. All those 1 star ratings complain about the auto contrast/brightness feature which could not be turned off, but SONY FIXED IT ALREADY in the newer units or a software update via sony.com will add the controls to turn the function off.

With that biggest gripe fixed, this TV has outstanding visual clarity and the color saturation is beautiful. Black levels are excellent on this non glossy screen. You can't go wrong with a Sony and the software update shows they are listening to their customer base. No dead/stuck pixel, great viewing angles, 120hz refresh is great for sports, but in my opinion, not for movies. Excellent TV, I would buy another one of these without hesitation, superior when compared to the other brands that offer the same features. The Bravia V series lives up to the Sony name and quality standards you would expect. Deserves all 5 of the stars it's rated.

excellent value
This was my first LCD TV purchase; I bought it after being quite impressed with the picture on the floor model at Best Buy, and nearly blown away by the clarity of the sound coming out of the speakers. (The latter was an important factor for me, because I don't want to invest in a home theater sound system just yet.) After three weeks, it hasn't disappointed at all. HD cable programming looks great, my Xbox 360 (via HDMI cable) looks and plays fantastically, and I'm somehow even getting a decent picture out of my old crappy DVD player. Standard definition cable programming is hit and miss; some channels look a lot better than others, for reasons I'm unsure of, although even the worse ones are certainly not bad enough to stop me from watching and enjoying them too. The sound is indeed amazing; I can turn down the volume to near-minimal levels and still hear everything that's happening on-screen (speech, music, and ambient noises).

I'll note that there are three HDMI inputs, not two as the "Product Details" section above seems to indicate.

Finally, I'll note that the two negative reviews below (as of the time of this posting) deal entirely with Amazon's delivery service; they say nothing substantive about the TV itself, which is a shame, because in my opinion this set is very high quality and (at its price) therefore a very good value.

Hands down, best TV for the price
Bought this TV after about 3 months of research. Watched all the TVs in Best Buy, Circuit City, Frys, etc., for hours. Could not get past the picture quality of this TV as compared to other models on the wall. And sound quality was by far the best among the TVs I looked at - important if you don't plan to use a home theater system. Stand and look at this TV in the store and compare it to the other TVs and you'll see what I mean. Picture quality seemed more natural and less grainy than other brands on the wall.

Before buying I breifly considered some 120 HZ models, including the Samsung 650 and the new Sony, all at around $500 more than this model. As for 120 Hz, I just couldn't tell a difference on broadcast HD/TV, and while the difference on movies was obvious, the effect seemed unnatural. Made films look more like live TV - interesting to watch, but just not a true movie experience in my opinion. I'm not knocking 120 Hz, just didn't feel like it was for me.

Connected this TV to a Sony progressive scan DVD using component connections and got incredible picture quality. I guess BlueRay via HDMI would be better, but honestly I can't imagine how. Still on analog cable at the moment with only a handful of digital HD channels available - all of which look fantastic. Converting to Verizon FIOS next week and looking forward to even better picture quality.

As for setup, I went from the box to watching TV in under 10 minutes. No alteration of the default picture settings was required in my opinion. I do recommend using the "standard" picture mode. "Vivid" is cool at first, but hard on the eyes after a while. And you will probably want to boost the bass a little on the audio. Standard definition channels, as viewed on any HD TV, will vary in quality. I found most standard def channels to look pretty good, and I think Sony does the best job overall of cleaning up the picture.

Remote is simple and easy to use, and I've found the on-screen menus to be reasonably intuitive. For me it had plenty of inputs: 3 HDMI, 2 component, 2 composite, and a PC. Also has a single audio out which can be used to connect to an A/V receiver or (I presume) a home theater system if you have one.

The only two cons I have found for this TV are: 1) after you power it on, it takes about 7-10 seconds before the picture comes on -- but my old Sony did this too so it wasn't a big deal to me. And 2) you can't scroll through channels quickly, you have to move one at a time. Not sure if this is unique to Sony or if all TVs do this. But if you're using a cable or satallite box, then this won't matter to you anyway.

Bottom line -- great picture quality, decent sound, affordable price, easy to setup and use, no complicated fine tuning required, and a brand name that won't embarrass you when your friends come over. Go see one in the store and then trust your eyes, you won't be disappointed.

Looks and sounds great
This is my second hdtv the first was the 27" Olevia. Since that purchase almost 10 months ago I have scrolled literally through hundreds of reviews commercial and consumer. Brands that I looked into repeatedly where: Philips, Olevia, Samsung, Vizio, Westinghouse, and LG.

I've rented an LG and it had probably the most amazing surround sound. My roommate owned a smaller sized Phillips which had fantastic image quality.

The reviews of Vizio and Westinghouse reminded me of what was being said about the Olevia. While the price of Olevia's 747i described as their flagship has dropped to a really nice price it still remains the heaviest.

Really like what Samsung has to offer and read just about every review for the 46a 550 mutiple times and the glowing theme was incredible image with unimpressive audio.

Recently walked into Target and did a walk through of there floor models where I saw this Sony model. Up until now, I was uninterested in Sony because felt it had more bells and whistles than I really needed and it was too pricey. But when I saw this floor model it was a clear stand out. While there I messed around with the settings and realized the remote was by far the easiest I had used. After muting the surrounding tvs I then tested out the floor models audio and just slightly halfway at more than 20ft away this model did well at pulling me in and just about everyone else that was there watching.

Thought maybe my initial impression might have been a little cloudy because of the limited sets on display so decided to stop by circuit city to view this model alongside some other top dollar sets. When I realized this set looked as good as similiarly priced sets and even those that were higher priced it hit me that this was the big screen HDtv that came with what I wanted: Clear image, crisp audio, and a remote that is so easy to use and program to the cable remote that I will have to hide it from my two year old.

Since setting up this lightweight screen is a breeze I was able to begin watching in minutes. If you are like me and have to put away your game console so the kids don't get in it the tv has a side HDMI port for easy access. After running Ninja gaiden sigma and Call of duty 4 at 1080p found myself mostly just soaking in cut scenes instead of actually playing through.

I'm purposely leaving out a review of this tv in standard definition because the image is good and bad depending on the channel. From what I've read a lot of this has to do with signal strength and processing. In short, HD looks good, audio sounds great, and with the easy set up and remote you'll probably be viewing hd faster than it took to actually buy the tv itself.
